چکیده

A conventional optical superlens for imaging beyond the diffraction limit produces images only in the near-field zone of the superlens. In contrast, an optical far-field superlens (FSL) device has a remarkable transmission property that leads to a one-to-one relationship between the far-field and the near-field angular spectra. This property makes the device suitable for imaging beyond the diffraction limit from far-field measurement. This specific FSL is composed of a properly designed periodically corrugated metallic slab-based superlens. Through the numerical design and parameter study, we show that the transmission property of this FSL is based on a specific strong-broadband wavenumber excitation of surface-plasmon polaritons supported by the nanostructured metallic grating. © 2006 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: 110.0180, 160.3900, 230.1950, 310.6860.

Far-field optical superlens.

Far-field optical lens resolution is fundamentally limited by diffraction, which typically is about half of the wavelength. This is due to the evanescent waves carrying small scale information from an object that fades away in the far field. A recently proposed superlens theory offers a new approach by surface excitation at the negative index medium. We introduce a far-field optical superlens (...

Plasmonic Lenses

The resolution of almost all conventional optical system is indispensably governed by the diffraction limit. This resolution limit can be overcome by use of focusing the evanescent waves in the near field region. The concept of “superlens” was proposed firstly by Pendry in 2000 [1]. When ε= -1and μ= -1, the negative refractive index material plate can be a perfect lens [2-4]. Because of the dis...

Two-dimensional imaging by far-field superlens at visible wavelengths.

We report that two-dimensional (2D) sub-diffraction-limited images can be theoretically reconstructed by a new metamaterial far-field superlens. The metamaterial far-field superlens, composed of a metal-dielectric multilayer and a one-dimensional (1D) subwavelength grating, can work over a broad range of visible wavelengths intrinsically. The imaging principle and the reconstruction process are...

Defining a Superlens Operating Regime for Imaging Fluorescent Molecules

It has been shown that thin metal-based films can at certain frequencies act as planar near-field lenses for certain polarization components. A desirable property of such "lenses" is that they can also enhance and focus some large transverse spatial frequency components which contain sub-diffraction limit details. Over the last decade there has been much work in optimizing designs to reduce eff...

An Optical Super-Microscope for Far-field, Real-time Imaging Beyond the Diffraction Limit

Optical microscopy suffers from a fundamental resolution limitation arising from the diffractive nature of light. While current solutions to sub-diffraction optical microscopy involve combinations of near-field, non-linear and fine scanning operations, we hereby propose and demonstrate the optical super-microscope (OSM) - a superoscillation-based linear imaging system with far-field working and...
